Permugenesis: A Recombinant Text (Natural History of Southwestern Ontario, Book III)
Published in Paperback by Nightwood Editions (December, 1987)
Author: Christopher Dewdney
Average review score:

Lovely, scarey, postmodern nature writing
Dewdney's "Permugenesis" is both an extension and a reworking of the first two sections of his long poem, "A Natural History of Southwestern Ontario." Phrases from the first two books ("Spring Trances in the Control Emerald Night" and "The Cenozoic Asylum") are repeated, though often in mutated form, and get a chance to mate with and breed all sorts of interesting new sentences. Dewdney's prose poems are dreamlike, often hallucinogenic -- one often feels he's speaking his own language. If John Ashbery and Annie Dillard had a child -- well, I'm not sure that he'd write like Dewdney; but I'm pretty sure the two of them would get along.

The Santa Fe School of Cooking Cookbook
Published in Paperback by Gibbs Smith Publisher (01 August, 1998)
Author: Susan Curtis
Average review score:

Wonderful introduction to the world of New Mexico's cuisine!
This is a super introduction to the habit-forming, varied cuisine of New Mexico! The recipes are tested in the Cooking School, so you can be sure that they are workable. Since I have attended three classes at the school, it is with confidence that I recommend this book. The recipe for New Mexican Green Chile and Cabbage Soup with Sausage alone is worth the price! There is a good list of sources for Southwestern ingredients in the back. My only criticism is that I find the layout of the index to be confusing.

Southwestern Country Classics: Early American Woodworking Projects
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/TAB Electronics (April, 1993)
Author: Gloria Saberin
Average review score:

Good introduction to SW style
Good basic text for the beginning woodworker. The projects are simple, the drawings are clear. The author only briefly touches on woodworking techniques, though, so the complete beginner will need to go to some other source. As a professional woodworker, I have used many of the projects in this book as a starting point for my own Southwestern and rustic furniture.

The Texas Holiday Cookbook
Published in Hardcover by Gulf Publishing (October, 1997)
Author: Dotty Griffith
Average review score:

Glorious Holiday Recipes Caters to Both Christians and Jews
Texans are a proud lot. They pride themselves on their cuisine, which is really not Southwestern and definitely not Southern, as the second largest state has diverse traditions, cultures and cuisine, and some absolutely delicious food.

Here's a wonderful book with glorious recipes for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah and New Year's. Beautiful photographs, cooking tips, menu ideas and sidebars quoting selected family traditions give the book a warm, personal touch. It's a book to read and enjoy even if you're not the one doing the cooking.

Best of all, most recipes are easy. You'll learn how to roast, smoke and deep-fry turkey along with recipes for making all the trimmings -- from Texas corn bread dressing to Dorothy's no-fail giblet gravy, even the ubiquitous green bean casserole all the way down to pumpkin, pecan and sweet potato pie.

Griffith's book caters to ethnicities. There's a recipe for Tex-Mex hot tamales and flan for the Latino community as well as potato latkes, sweet noodle kugel and rugelach for the Jewish faith. But you certainly don't have to be Hispanic or Jewish to try these recipes -- all tested and ready for becoming your own traditions, too.

There's even a section on making homemade food gifts, a grand way to say "happy holidays" to friends and relatives with a personal touch. Spicy pecans, Lone Star caviar and Texas trash are among the festive recipes.

Don't miss this book. It's the perfect companion for the holidays.

The Texas Revolutionary Experience: A Political and Social History, 1835-1836 (Texas A&m Southwestern Studies , No 10)
Published in Paperback by Texas A&M University Press (August, 1996)
Author: Paul D. Lack
Average review score:

The Texas Revolutionary Experience
Having read this book, one finds it was written more as a history book than a fact book. It was an excellent book, mostly for those students of Texas history. It gives details as if you were living in that time frame. Kinda like a time machine back to the 1835-36 period. I would recommend this book only to the serious in mind of Texas history. Otherwise you might find it pretty boring.

Texas Tapestry: Weaving Together the Flavors of Texas

This cookbook has become one of my most used .
This cookbook is one of my stash that I pull out regularly. I have several favorites I make over and over again plus I check it out often for new dishes to try. My sister in-law was one of three women who tested every recipe submitted for the book. The recipes are accurate, fool-proof and delicious. I have given it as a gift several times and always hear back from friends how much they like the book too! Some of my favorite recipes are, "Black Bean Salsa," "Texas Tortilla Soup" and "Southern Sweet Potato Casserole."
